Eelgrass Conservation Moorings Demonstration Project
In May 2010, ACFHP issued its first project endorsement. The project endorsed, entitled Eelgrass Conservation Moorings Demonstration Project is located in Tisbury, MA and involves state, Federal, local, NGO and industry partners. This demonstration project involves replacing traditional chain and block-anchor mooring systems with new mooring technology and monitoring to determine whether such technology allows eelgrass to reestablish itself in areas previously scoured by traditional moorings.
Eelgrass communities are important ecological communities along the Atlantic coast, providing habitat, nursery grounds, and food to an incredible diversity of coastal fish and shellfish species. Over the past 70 years, impacts from human activities like mooring fields have degraded or destroyed nearly 90% of all eelgrass along the Atlantic Coast. ACFHP is providing an endorsement of specific remediation actions at the project site which address historic damage caused by the scouring effects of traditional mooring systems. Although ACFHP is not endorsing the establishment of mooring fields in seagrass beds directly, ACFHP applauds the search for tools, techniques and approaches to address historic impacts in these sensitive ecosystems and efforts to forge partnerships between multiple entities.
